Bible Commentary for Isaiah 40:eight

Wesley’s Notes for Isaiah xl:8

40:6 Weep – God speaks unto his ministers. He – The prophet. All flesh – The prophet having foretold glorious things, confirms the certainty of them, by representing the vast difference betwixt the nature, and word, and piece of work of men and of God. All that men are or have, yea, their highest accomplishments, are but like the grass of the field, weak and vanishing, before long nipt and brought to nothing; but God’s word is similar himself, immutable and irresistible: and therefore equally the rima oris of the Lord, and not of man, hath spoken these things, so dubiety not but they shall be fulfilled.

40:nine Zion – Zion or Jerusalem is the publisher, and the cities of Judah the hearers. Get up – That thy voice may exist improve heard. Afraid – Lest k shouldest exist institute a fake prophet. Say – To all my people in the several places of their abode. Behold – Have observe of this wonderful piece of work, and glorious advent of your God.

forty:10 His arm – He shall need no succours, for his own ability shall be sufficient to govern his people, and to destroy his adversaries. His reward – He comes furnished with recompences besides of blessings for his friends, equally of vengeance for his enemies. His work – He carries on his piece of work effectually: for that is said in scripture to be before a man which is in his power.
